Breakfast room and meeting place in central Malmö

In the autumn of 2019, Moment Hotels in Malmö seized the opportunity to expand its operations into an adjacent building. Despite the onset of the pandemic just months later, the hotel chose to move forward with the project to deliver an even better guest experience by 2020. "We selected IKEA as our partner because affordability, sustainability, and space efficiency were key values for us, and we saw that IKEA could meet those expectations," says Burim Sumiq, CEO of Moment Hotels.

IKEA was tasked with designing and implementing the new section of the hotel, which includes a breakfast room, a meeting space, and approximately 80 hotel rooms. The breakfast room was completed in September 2020, designed to be a flexible space that is easy to rearrange and also serves as a coworking area.

Together with IKEA, we are continuing the development of Moment Hotels. Soon, we will offer 80 new hotel rooms where affordability, sustainability, and design go hand in hand.

Flexible and sustainably designed

Anna Andersson, corporate interior designer at IKEA, explains that the hotel now boasts a flexible and sustainably designed breakfast area. The space retains the building's period charm while incorporating modern functionality.

"I selected furniture and interiors that staff can easily move and rearrange to accommodate different uses for the room. To enhance the various seating options, I chose tables and chairs at three different heights, as well as a mix of hard and soft materials."

"To highlight the beautiful architectural elements of the space and harmonize them with the interior design, I worked with warm tones and natural materials in a traditional Scandinavian style. More sustainable materials like leather, wood, linen, and cotton stand the test of time and only grow more beautiful with age."

Beautiful details enhance the building's history

To add more character to the room and complement its beautiful architecture, "wainscoting" was created using doors from IKEA's kitchen range. The furniture arrangement is flexible, with lightweight tables that can easily be adjusted to suit various seating configurations.

Customized interior design to suit various needs

The interior design is planned based on different needs. High, low, hard, soft, small, large, or—like here—separated. The rattan sofas with high backs create a room within a room, providing a private space for work or a break. The seat and back cushions are removable and machine washable.

Simple and affordable update

Changing textiles is an easy way to update the decor according to the season. By refreshing the cushions on the sofa, the dining area always feels fresh and updated.

With IKEA's help, we've created a wonderfully minimalist Scandinavian atmosphere while maintaining the charm of the turn-of-the-century building. I dare say we have Malmö's most beautiful hotel dining room.
